What is the Tangem Ring?

Tangem Ring is a wearable self-custody hardware wallet built around the same NFC-based approach used by Tangem's card-style hardware wallets.

Instead of carrying the primary hardware wallet as a card, the secure hardware is incorporated into a wearable ring. The Ring communicates with a compatible smartphone through NFC and works with the Tangem mobile application.

The private key is protected by a secure-element chip. Cryptographic operations are performed by the hardware, while the Tangem application provides the interface for viewing accounts and preparing transactions.

The Ring has no screen, buttons, charging port or internal battery. It receives the power needed for communication from the smartphone's NFC field.

How Tangem Ring works

Tangem Ring uses NFC to communicate with a compatible smartphone. The Tangem application provides the visual interface, while the secure hardware inside the Ring protects the wallet's private key.

When the wallet needs to authorize a protected operation, the Ring is brought close to the smartphone's NFC area.

The smartphone supplies power to the Ring through the NFC field, allowing it to operate without a battery.

The secure element performs the cryptographic operation without intentionally exposing the private key to the smartphone.

Security features and limitations

Security advantages

  • Secure-element protection: Private keys are protected inside dedicated secure hardware rather than being stored directly on the smartphone.
  • EAL6+ certification: The secure element uses a Common Criteria-certified security architecture.
  • NFC communication: The Ring does not require a permanent wired connection to a computer or smartphone.
  • No battery: There is no battery to charge, replace or maintain.
  • Backup cards: The Ring package can use Tangem cards as hardware backups, providing additional physical access devices.
  • Wearable form: The Ring provides a different physical format from conventional card or USB-style hardware wallets.

Limitations to consider

  • No independent display: Transaction details are displayed on the smartphone, not on the Ring itself.
  • Phone dependence: Normal wallet management requires a compatible NFC-enabled smartphone.
  • Wearable loss risk: A ring can be misplaced or lost, making backup planning important.
  • Physical sizing: Unlike a wallet card, the Ring must be purchased in an appropriate physical size for comfortable use.
  • Secure-element firmware: The secure-element implementation is not completely open source.
  • Human error: Hardware protection cannot prevent users from approving an incorrect or malicious transaction.

The Ring and backup cards

An important part of the Tangem Ring design is that the wearable device does not need to be the user's only hardware access point.

Tangem Ring packages are designed around the Ring and backup cards that can be configured for the same wallet.

This means a user can wear the Ring for regular access while keeping backup cards in secure locations.

If the Ring is lost or damaged, a properly configured backup card can provide another way to access the same wallet.

Backup planning: Do not store the Ring and every backup card together. Separating backup devices reduces the chance that one physical event results in losing all wallet access.

No hardware screen

Tangem Ring does not contain an independent screen. Wallet balances, destination addresses and transaction information are presented through the Tangem mobile application.

This is a significant design difference compared with screen-equipped hardware wallets from manufacturers such as Trezor, Ledger and ELLIPAL.

A screen-equipped wallet can show transaction information directly on the hardware device before approval. Tangem instead relies on the smartphone to display that information.

Important trade-off: The screenless design helps make the Ring compact, battery-free and wearable. Users who specifically want independent on-device transaction verification may prefer a hardware wallet with its own display.

Supported cryptocurrencies

Tangem Ring works with the Tangem ecosystem and supports the cryptocurrencies and blockchain networks made available through the Tangem application.

Examples include:

  • Bitcoin (BTC)
  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • XRP (XRP Ledger)
  • Solana (SOL)
  • Cardano (ADA)
  • Litecoin (LTC)
  • Dogecoin (DOGE)
  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
  • Supported Ethereum and EVM tokens
  • BNB Smart Chain assets
  • Polygon and supported tokens

Cryptocurrency and network compatibility can change as the Tangem application is updated.

Always check Tangem's current supported-assets information for the exact cryptocurrency and network before transferring funds.

Tangem Ring and XRP

Tangem's wallet ecosystem supports XRP on the XRP Ledger. The Tangem Ring can therefore be used as the hardware component protecting an XRP wallet configured through the Tangem application.

The Ring protects the private key, while the smartphone application provides the account and transaction interface.

Before sending XRP, verify the destination address, network and any destination-tag requirements.

Some exchanges and custodial services require a destination tag for incoming XRP transfers.

For a newly configured wallet, a small initial transfer can help verify that the address and network were entered correctly before larger transfers are made.

What happens if the Ring is lost?

Losing the Ring does not necessarily mean losing the cryptocurrency.

If the wallet was correctly configured with backup cards, one of those cards can provide another hardware method of accessing the same wallet.

The remaining backup devices should then be treated carefully, because they continue to provide access to the wallet's cryptographic credentials.

Recovery possibilities ultimately depend on how the wallet was configured, so users should understand their backup arrangement before storing significant assets.

What happens if your phone is lost?

The cryptocurrency is not stored on the smartphone itself. The phone primarily provides the Tangem application interface.

If the phone is lost, damaged or replaced, the Tangem application can generally be installed on another compatible NFC-enabled smartphone.

The Ring or a configured backup card can then be used with the replacement phone.

Using the Tangem application

The Tangem application acts as the main interface for Tangem Ring.

Depending on the asset and current software version, the app can be used to:

  • View cryptocurrency balances
  • Generate receiving addresses
  • Prepare outgoing transactions
  • Manage supported cryptocurrencies and networks
  • Configure wallet security settings
  • Manage supported tokens
  • Interact with supported wallet services

Protected wallet operations require interaction with the Ring or another configured Tangem hardware device.
