What does it do?
A hardware wallet protects the keys used to authorize transactions. Your assets remain on their blockchain; they are not stored inside the device. You use Ledger Wallet or a compatible third-party interface to view accounts and prepare transfers, then review and approve signing requests using the wallet's screen and physical buttons.
Nano X uses a compact OLED display and two-button interface rather than a touchscreen. Bluetooth supports mobile use, while USB-C provides a wired connection. Some assets require a compatible third-party wallet interface.

Security features and trade-offs
Useful protections
- On-device checks: inspect addresses and transaction information on the wallet's own OLED screen before approval.
- Secure Element: signing keys are designed to remain protected inside the dedicated chip during normal use.
- Physical confirmation: use the device's buttons to approve or reject requests.
- PIN protection: repeated incorrect PIN entries reset the device; restoration requires a valid backup.
Limits to understand
- The small screen and button navigation make lengthy transaction details harder to inspect than on larger touchscreen models.
- Nano X does not provide the same Transaction Check feature set as newer Ledger touchscreen models; signing information varies by integration.
- A hardware wallet can still approve a harmful transfer or token permission.
- Ledger's software stack is not entirely open source. Some Secure Element and operating-system components remain proprietary.
Bluetooth is a connection method, not permission to spend funds. Ledger says private keys are not sent over Bluetooth; nevertheless, check each request on the device. If you prefer, turn Bluetooth off and use USB-C with a compatible computer.
Supported assets and phone compatibility
Check Ledger's supported-assets directory for each exact coin, token and network. Device support and direct support inside Ledger Wallet are different. A third-party interface may be needed, and token names alone do not establish network compatibility.
Ledger lists support for compatible iOS and Android phones through Bluetooth, plus supported 64-bit Windows, macOS and Ubuntu desktops. It lists Chromebooks as incompatible. Requirements can change, so check the current app and firmware requirements before purchasing.
For XRP holders: XRP is listed among Ledger-supported assets. Confirm receiving account requirements, current reserve and any destination tag required by an exchange before transferring.
Understand recovery and backup options
1. Your recovery phrase
The recovery phrase is a secret backup for your wallet. Record it accurately during setup and keep it offline, away from your device. Never photograph it, put it in cloud storage, paste it into an AI chat or enter it into a website. A PIN does not replace this backup.
2. Restoring with your recovery phrase
If the Nano X is lost or damaged, a compatible replacement wallet can restore access using the correct recovery phrase. Nano X does not include the NFC-based Ledger Recovery Key accessory used with certain newer touchscreen models. Protect the recovery phrase offline and never disclose it to support staff or websites.
3. Ledger Recover
Ledger Recover is a separate optional paid backup service with identity verification, available only where the device, firmware and region are supported. It uses encrypted backup fragments managed through third-party providers. You do not need to subscribe to use Nano X. Review its privacy requirements, provider dependence, fees and terms before opting in.
What is included?
Ledger lists the Nano X, a USB-C to USB-A cable, three recovery sheets, a keychain strap and safety/regulatory information. Contents may differ by bundle or region; verify the selected offer at checkout.
A careful first setup
- Buy through a verified source. Use Ledger or a reseller listed by Ledger.
- Download official software. Navigate to Ledger’s setup page yourself and follow the Nano X instructions.
- Complete authenticity and update checks. Follow the official setup flow; packaging alone does not establish authenticity.
- Create a new wallet and PIN. Reject a device with prewritten recovery words or a supplied PIN.
- Record and verify your backup. Enter recovery words only on the Ledger device when its official process requires them. Keep the recovery sheets securely stored offline.
- Add the right account. Confirm the asset and network, then verify the receiving address on the wallet.
- Test before transferring more. Allow for fees and receiving minimums. Confirm a small transfer arrived correctly, then recheck every subsequent transfer.
If your existing software-wallet phrase has been exposed, importing it onto hardware does not make it secret again. Create a fresh backup and transfer assets to the new wallet instead.
Who might consider it?
Our assessment: Nano X may suit someone who prefers a compact device with mobile Bluetooth connectivity and physical confirmation buttons. Compare it with touchscreen models if you want a larger display for reading transaction details, or with wired-only options if you do not need wireless use. Ease of use and security both depend on how you manage it.
Common questions
Is Nano X a cold wallet even though it uses Bluetooth?
It is a hardware signer designed to keep signing keys in its Secure Element during ordinary transactions. The companion app connects to the internet to communicate with blockchains. Using hardware does not remove the risks of harmful contracts, approvals or exposed backups.
What happens if it breaks or is lost?
A damaged device does not erase assets from the blockchain. You can restore access using a valid recovery method. If someone may have accessed your secrets, move remaining assets to a fresh wallet using a trusted device and official instructions.
Does the PIN recover my wallet?
No. The PIN protects access to that device. Recovery requires the correct backup, plus the passphrase if your accounts use one.
Is Ledger Recover mandatory?
No. It is a separate opt-in service. You can use the device with your own offline recovery backup.
Does the Nano X stop every scam?
No. On-device review can help, but you must understand the destination and permissions. Stop if the wallet cannot display enough information for you to verify the request.
