What does it do?

DCENT S is a card-format hardware wallet that signs supported cryptocurrency transactions using NFC communication with a compatible phone. Your cryptocurrency remains on its blockchain; the card protects the keys used to authorize transactions.

Unlike DCENT X and the Biometric Wallet, DCENT S has no built-in screen or fingerprint reader. You review transaction details in the DCENT mobile app and tap the card to authorize supported operations. The separate R3covery card is for encrypted recovery backup, not everyday transaction signing.

Security features and trade-offs

Useful protections

  • Secure element: a dedicated security chip is designed to protect the signing keys.
  • Card PIN: a six-digit PIN controls access to card operations.
  • Separate recovery card: the included R3covery card stores an encrypted backup, kept apart from the main card.
  • No battery or charging: NFC powers the card when tapped to a compatible phone.

Limits to understand

  • No independent device display: transaction details are viewed on the phone, so a compromised phone or misleading app interface is a significant consideration.
  • The NFC card and PIN cannot determine whether a recipient or smart-contract request is trustworthy.
  • Do not assume every firmware component or secure-element implementation is publicly auditable.
  • Losing the main card and all valid recovery methods may permanently prevent access to the wallet.

DCENT describes app-based transaction checks, including security-warning features. Treat those as aids rather than guarantees; independently verify recipients, networks and transaction details.

Supported assets and phone compatibility

DCENT lists support for major networks including Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP Ledger, but coin and token availability can change. Confirm the exact asset, network and DCENT S model using the manufacturer's current supported-assets list before transferring funds.

DCENT S requires an NFC-capable phone and the DCENT mobile app. The official setup guide specifies Card Wallet mode and app version 9.2.0 or later. NFC settings and the phone's antenna location vary by device.

For XRP holders: verify XRP Ledger support and the receiving address, check whether a destination tag is needed, and account for any applicable network reserve or fees.

Understand the recovery and access options

1. The DCENT S main card

This is the everyday signing card. DCENT's documented setup uses a six-digit PIN and NFC taps. The card is not interchangeable with the R3covery card, which is a backup accessory rather than a transaction signer.

2. The R3covery NFC backup card

The included R3covery card stores an encrypted copy of the wallet's 24-word recovery phrase. DCENT documents using a separate recovery-card PIN and an NFC tap to restore access on a compatible replacement DCENT device. Store the backup card separately from the main card.

3. The 24-word recovery phrase

Although DCENT markets a setup without needing to write recovery words on paper, its official setup guide also documents the option to write down and verify the 24-word phrase. The wallet still uses recovery credentials; "seedless" refers to the simplified backup experience, not the absence of underlying recovery data.

Important distinction: R3covery is designed for DCENT S and DCENT X. It is not a general-purpose recovery card for the older DCENT Biometric Wallet or other brands. Never share recovery words or PINs with a website, support agent or chat.

What is included?

The DCENT S + R3covery Card Kit includes a DCENT S main signing card and a separate R3covery backup card. Confirm the exact packaging and any included documentation on the manufacturer's checkout page; bundles can change.

A careful first setup

  1. Use a trusted source. Obtain the kit from DCENT or an authorized retailer and inspect it before setup.
  2. Install the official app. Update the DCENT mobile app and select Card Wallet mode.
  3. Enable NFC. On a compatible Android phone, enable NFC in settings; iPhone NFC behaviour is handled by iOS.
  4. Create the card wallet. Tap the main DCENT S card as prompted and set its six-digit PIN.
  5. Register your backup. Follow the official R3covery process, set the backup-card PIN and keep the two cards in different secure locations.
  6. Review recovery choices. Follow DCENT's instructions for recording and verifying recovery words if you choose an additional offline backup.
  7. Check a small transfer. Confirm the coin, network and recipient carefully in the app before sending a larger amount.

Do not photograph or upload recovery words, and do not assume that an encrypted backup card makes every recovery failure impossible.

Who might consider it?

Our assessment: DCENT S may appeal to people who prefer a slim, battery-free NFC wallet and a separate recovery card included with the kit. Its main compromise is the lack of a device screen for independent transaction verification. Compare that trade-off with screen-equipped wallets before choosing.

Common questions

Does DCENT S have a screen or fingerprint sensor?

No. DCENT S is a screen-free NFC card wallet. You review information in the mobile app and use a card PIN and NFC tap for supported operations.

Does the kit include a R3covery card?

Yes. DCENT lists the DCENT S + R3covery Card Kit as including a main wallet card and a separate recovery-only backup card. Verify current package contents at checkout.

Does DCENT S need to be charged?

No. It is battery-free and uses NFC communication with a compatible phone.

Does “seedless setup” mean there is no recovery phrase?

No. DCENT S uses a 24-word recovery phrase, which can be backed up in encrypted form on the R3covery card. The official setup guide also describes recording the phrase on paper.

Can the R3covery card sign transactions?

No. It is a recovery-only backup accessory. The main DCENT S card is used for everyday transaction signing.

Can I use DCENT S with XRP?

DCENT advertises XRP Ledger support for DCENT S. Confirm the current supported-assets list and network details before transferring XRP.

Is a screen-free wallet as secure as a wallet with a display?

Both approaches have trade-offs. Without a hardware display, you cannot independently confirm transaction details on the signing device; you depend more on the phone and companion app for review.
